The Missing Piece: New Chinese BL – What the Story Is Really About

Adapted from the novel of the same name by Kun Yi Wei Lou (困倚危楼), The Missing Piece premiered on September 7, 2026, with its first two episodes. The fourth episode is airing today.

I read the novel years ago and really enjoyed it, so I was very curious about the drama adaptation. So far, I think they have done a really good job with it. I love a good chaotic romance, and The Missing Piece is exactly that kind of story.

However, I’ve seen quite a few viewers getting confused about the story. The reason the drama can feel confusing isn’t necessarily because the story itself is complicated. It’s more because the characters remember their past in different ways, and we don’t learn everything at the same time.

If you want to have at least a basic understanding of what is going on and enjoy the drama a little more, I recommend giving this post a read. Based on the first three episodes, I want to explain what has happened in the story so far and go into the relationships between the characters a little more.

A small note: This post is based on what has been revealed in the first three episodes of the drama and the original synopsis. So, it does contain some minor spoilers to make the story easier to understand. However, I won’t be talking about events that happen later in the novel. My goal is simply to explain some of the things that were left unclear or were a little difficult to understand in the first few episodes, and hopefully help anyone who has been left with questions.

If the novel The Missing Piece is adapted from has caught your interest and you’d like to read it, I’ll also leave a link to the novel below.

What Is The Missing Piece About?

Shen Mo and Zhou Yang have been together since high school, but Zhou Yang’s family has other plans. They want Zhou Yang to marry Ji An’an, the daughter of the Ji family, so they send the two of them abroad. At the same time, Shen Mo is kidnapped by Zhou Yang’s family, tortured, and threatened. Just when he is left to die, he is rescued by Ji An’an’s older brother, Ji Mingxuan, the young CEO of the Ji family.

Because of the trauma he went through, Shen Mo cannot remember Zhou Yang’s face and believes that the person who saved him was Zhou Yang. Mingxuan realizes that Shen Mo has mistaken him for Zhou Yang, but he doesn’t walk away from him.

They live together for six months, and during that time, Mingxuan genuinely falls in love with him, even though he knows that Shen Mo’s feelings are actually meant for someone from his past.

When Shen Mo’s memories return, he realizes that he spent those six months with Mingxuan. But after another incident, he completely forgets that six-month period all over again.

Now that Shen Mo no longer remembers their relationship, Ji Mingxuan knows that he has forgotten everything about those six months. Even so, he doesn’t want to let him go. He asks Shen Mo to sign a relationship contract, giving him a reason to stay by his side.

To Shen Mo, Ji Mingxuan is simply the man who rescued him after he was kidnapped. He believes their relationship exists only for Ji An’an’s sake, so he doesn’t think Mingxuan genuinely loves him. Fragments of those six months still come back to Shen Mo from time to time, but they are vague and incomplete. He cannot remember the face of the person who was with him, so he believes those memories were of Zhou Yang.

They enter this fake relationship, and three years go by before Ji An’an and Zhou Yang return from abroad, bringing the past back into Shen Mo’s life once again.

Why Does Ji Mingxuan Make the Contract?

Ji Mingxuan doesn’t want to lose Shen Mo, even if Shen Mo has forgotten him and no longer loves him. He wants to stay by his side, keep him from going back to Zhou Yang, and, most importantly, hold on to the hope that Shen Mo might love him again someday. The contract gives him a way to keep that possibility within reach.

On the surface, the purpose is to protect his sister An’an’s relationship, but in reality, this is also an excuse Mingxuan uses to hide his own feelings.

His controlling and possessive behavior may look like a red flag at first, but underneath it is his fear of losing Shen Mo and his anxiety that his love will never be returned. That doesn’t make his actions right, but it does give them some context.

And in Episode 3, we clearly see that Ji Mingxuan has no intention of forcing Shen Mo to stay with him. He tells him directly, “You can end this contract and leave whenever you want.” Because what he really wants isn’t absolute physical possession. He wants Shen Mo’s heart. He wants to have that genuine love he experienced during those six months again, those eyes that once looked at him with love.

But when it comes to actually putting that into practice, things get a little different! On one hand, he gives Shen Mo the freedom to end the contract, but on the other, when Shen Mo is supposed to meet Zhou Yang, Mingxuan plans a special trip for Zhou Yang and his sister. And as if that wasn’t enough, he uses his illness as an excuse to keep Shen Mo from going to work and makes him stay home to take care of him.

Basically, he is very much in his “You can leave if you want, but I’m going to do everything I can to make sure you don’t” era. 😂

Shen Mo and Zhou Yang

There is no doubt that they genuinely loved each other in the past, but their relationship feels almost one sided in retrospect.

Zhou Yang never really stood up for Shen Mo. He couldn’t stand up to his family, he doesn’t even know what Shen Mo went through, and when he returns, An’an is by his side, yet he still sees Shen Mo as the one who ended their relationship.

They had been together for years, but Zhou Yang doesn’t even know about Shen Mo’s seafood allergy. Maybe Shen Mo simply never mentioned it, but even so, it shows us how little he actually knows about the person he supposedly loved for all those years.

Maybe he still loves Shen Mo now, but he isn’t brave enough to stand against his family and leave everything behind for him.

What About Ji Mingxuan and Shen Mo’s Relationship?

Shen Mo doesn’t believe that Mingxuan genuinely loves him. He thinks their relationship exists only to protect An’an. He doesn’t see himself as someone worthy of someone like Mr. Ji and believes that, to Mingxuan, he is nothing more than a toy.

But at the same time, he is clearly jealous of him and, deep down, he genuinely wants to be loved.

When Ji Mingxuan tells him that he can leave whenever he wants, Shen Mo immediately throws back, “Then you can freely hang out with Zhao Yi.” He is making his jealousy pretty obvious without even realizing it. He is so cute. 😭

When he learns that Zhou Yang and Ji An’an are going to get married, one of the first things he asks is whether that means his relationship contract with Mingxuan will end.

And on top of all that, we have seen how gently and lovingly Mingxuan takes care of him when he is sick. So at this point, I honestly think it’s ridiculous to wonder whether Shen Mo still has feelings for Ji Mingxuan.

They are both hopelessly in love with each other, yet they both believe that their love is completely one sided. One hides his love behind contracts, while the other cannot even allow himself to consider the possibility that he could actually be loved.

That lack of communication makes the story incredibly addictive to watch, but at the same time, it really knows how to hurt your heart. 💔
